Army Commander Tycoon Beginner Guide — First Hour to HQ 5

Army Commander Tycoon looks like a standard base builder until you realise your income ladder is the only thing that matters and capture points can double it. This guide covers the first hour in the order the game actually rewards, from your first $90 oil rig to the Command Citadel.

The Core Loop

Every session follows the same rhythm: build and upgrade income buildings, watch your Cash per second climb, spend it on the next tier of building or unit unlock, then push out to capture lettered points that add a bonus on top of your base income. Combat exists to protect that income, not the other way around.

That framing matters because new players usually over-invest in units. A single $2.50M Main Battle Tank unlock does nothing for your income. A $12.0K Oil Rig 10 upgrade that adds +12/s pays for itself in under seventeen minutes. Until you have a stable income base, combat units are a drain, not a strategy.

The game's own panels say it plainly: unlock a unit type once, then every matching spawner fields it for free and losses are replaced at no cost. That means unit unlocks are one-time purchases — never re-buy the same unit.

First Buildings, In Order

The early oil rig ladder is deliberately cheap so that the first few minutes pay for themselves almost instantly. Build them in sequence rather than saving up for one big purchase.

BuildingCostIncomePayback time
Oil Rig 1$90+3/s30 sec
Oil Rig 2$160+4/s40 sec
Oil Rig 3$270+5/s54 sec
Oil Rig 4$470+7/s67 sec
Supply Depot$400+3/s2 min 13 sec
Power Plant$1,200+10% baseDepends on base size
Troop Tent$300Fields 6 infantryNot income — defence only

Note that the Power Plant is a multiplier, not a flat addition. Building it too early wastes its value, because 10% of a tiny base is a tiny number. Delay it until your flat income is established — usually after Oil Rig 4 and the Supply Depot are down.

When to Push Headquarters

Headquarters upgrades are the single biggest gate in the game. Each level unlocks a new tier of buildings, units and spawners, and the HQ itself adds income. But the costs escalate violently: $2,500 for HQ 1 to 2, $60.0K for 2 to 3, and $1.00M for 3 to 4.

  • HQ 1 to 2 ($2,500): buy immediately once your first oil rigs are down — it adds +4/s and unlocks tier 2 buildings
  • HQ 2 to 3 ($60.0K): unlocks armour, heavy armour and radar; this is where your income engine should be self-sustaining
  • HQ 3 to 4 ($1.00M): unlocks helicopters, aircraft, warships and artillery — the point where combat becomes real
  • HQ 4 to 5: required before promotion; you cannot rebirth until you hold the Command Citadel

Warning: Do not push HQ levels while your income is still below roughly $50/s. You will reach HQ 4 with no money to buy anything from the tier you just unlocked, and stall for twenty minutes.

Capture Points — The Income Multiplier Most Players Ignore

The shared island has lettered capture points from A to Q. Holding one pays a bonus on top of your base income, and losing one costs you that bonus. This is the part of the game that separates a fast account from a slow one: two players with identical bases can have very different income purely from how many points they hold.

You do not need an expensive army to start. Infantry from the Troop Tent cost nothing to replace and can flood a point faster than a single player can respond. Order squads with the AUTO, FOLLOW ME, HOLD or BASE commands depending on whether you want to contest, escort, or defend.

Capture points in the early game with cheap infantry rather than waiting for tanks. A troop tent's free reinforcements make infantry the most cost-efficient point-flipping tool on the map for the first hour.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  1. Buying combat units before building income — units do not earn, oil rigs do
  2. Skipping the cheap early oil rigs to save for one expensive building, losing minutes of compounding income
  3. Building a Power Plant before there is a meaningful base to multiply
  4. Ignoring capture points and wondering why another player's income is higher with the same buildings
  5. Pushing HQ levels too fast and arriving at a tier with no Cash to spend in it
  6. Buying a Gold ELITE unit before unlocking the Cash units of that branch
