Build Your Backrooms Monster Tier List — Best Monsters Ranked
Not every monster in Build Your Backrooms pays for itself. A monster is only worth its price if its catch rate multiplied by the value of the room it sits in out-earns the next-cheapest alternative. This tier list ranks monsters by that metric — real earning power, not rarity.

How This Tier List Is Ranked
S-Tier — Place These First, Every Time
- High-speed corridor hunters — absurd catch rate, ideal for one-tile choke points near your entrance
- Premium-room anchors — monsters with a payout multiplier when placed inside a high-value building; these scale hardest with upgrades
- Roaming mid-section specialists — they catch the sprinters who sprint past static traps, covering your income leak
A-Tier — Solid Earners, Slightly Slower Payback
- Reliable mid-cost monsters with balanced catch rate and payout
- Utility monsters that slow intruders rather than catching them directly — they increase every other monster's catch rate when paired
- Entry-level premium-room monsters that become S-tier once your building is upgraded
B-Tier — Filler and Early-Game Stepping Stones
C & D-Tier — Avoid or Replace on Sight
- Slow monsters with high prices — they lose races to sprinting intruders on every corridor
- Monsters with a catch effect but effectively no payout value
- Rare cosmetic-variant monsters that cost premium prices for identical stats
- Any monster whose description sells 'rarity' rather than catch rate or payout — that is a cash trap
